Spotlight on Marshall: A Story of Strength, Determination, and New Beginnings

At Mays Mission for the Handicapped, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and purpose. Few stories demonstrate that belief better than the inspiring journey of one of our very own employees—Marshall.

Sometimes, making a difference in someone’s life begins with a simple act of kindness. Other times, that one act opens the door to opportunities that can change a life forever. For Marshall, his journey with Mays Mission has been one of perseverance, friendship, and remarkable progress.

A Helping Hand When It Was Needed Most

When we first met Marshall, he was living in a small hotel room that made navigating his power wheelchair extremely difficult. Everyday activities that many of us take for granted presented challenges because his living space simply wasn’t designed to accommodate his needs.

Recognizing his situation, Mays Mission stepped in to help Marshall move into a larger, more accessible apartment. This change provided him with something incredibly important: the freedom to move around his own home more comfortably and independently.

But Marshall’s story didn’t end there.

Small Changes, Big Differences

Following a stroke that left him with significant mobility limitations, Marshall faced another challenge. The controls on his power wheelchair were positioned on the right side, making it difficult for him to operate comfortably.

Our team helped relocate the wheelchair’s controller to the left side, making it easier for Marshall to get around.

Not long afterward, we received a message from Marshall that reminded us exactly why we do what we do:

“I rode my powerchair to church last night, and my chair was so much easier to ride since you guys fixed my controller from the right side to the left side, thanks so much for being my friend.”

Those simple, heartfelt words meant the world to us. What might seem like a minor adjustment to some made a tremendous difference in Marshall’s everyday life.

And perhaps the most meaningful part of his message wasn’t about the wheelchair at all. It was those last few words: “Thanks so much for being my friend.”

At Mays Mission, we strive to do more than provide assistance. We build relationships, encourage independence, and remind people that they are valued.

From Receiving Help to Becoming Part of the Team

Marshall’s journey took another exciting turn when he became an employee of Mays Mission!

Through our on-the-job training program for individuals with disabilities, Marshall was given an opportunity to put his abilities to work, contribute to our mission, and experience the pride that comes with meaningful employment.

Despite the physical challenges he faces, Marshall has shown tremendous determination and a willingness to work. He continues to do a wonderful job, proving that physical limitations do not define a person’s potential.

We couldn’t be prouder of him!

Marshall is more than someone we’ve had the privilege of helping. He’s now part of the Mays Mission family, working alongside others who demonstrate every day that individuals with disabilities have valuable talents, skills, and contributions to offer.

A Living Example of Our Mission

When our founder, E.W. Mays, established Mays Mission in 1969, he did so with a powerful belief:

“It’s ability, not disability, that counts!”

Marshall’s story brings those words to life.

From finding a more accessible home to gaining greater independence with his wheelchair, and ultimately becoming a valued member of our workforce, Marshall’s journey illustrates what can happen when compassion meets opportunity.

His story is also a reminder that helping someone doesn’t always mean doing something extraordinary. Sometimes it’s providing a more accessible place to live. Sometimes it’s making a small adjustment to a wheelchair. And sometimes it’s simply believing in someone’s ability to succeed when they need an opportunity.

We’re Proud of You, Marshall!

Marshall, we want you to know how much we appreciate your hard work, your determination, and the positive example you set for others.

Your journey reminds us why Mays Mission exists and why our work matters. We are grateful not only to have played a part in your story but also to have you as part of our team.

At Mays Mission, we don’t just believe in changing circumstances. We believe in changing lives, one opportunity at a time.

And Marshall is living proof that when we focus on ability instead of disability, wonderful things can happen.
