Spotlight On David

At Mays Mission, we are fortunate to know some truly remarkable individuals — and today, we’d love to share the inspiring story of one of them: David Marrs.

Some of you may remember hearing about David before. His journey is one of resilience, strength, and what can happen when someone is simply given a chance.

David suffered a stroke as an infant, which left him partially paralyzed and without the use of one of his arms. The stroke also affected his brain, resulting in challenges with memory, cognition, and speech. But if you know David, you know that these challenges never stopped him.

Throughout his life, David encountered barrier after barrier. But he met every one of them with the same approach: persist and overcome.

As he got older, David had two goals — to own a car and to live more independently. But despite his drive and determination, no one would give him a shot. Until he came to Mays Mission.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we were able to welcome David into our team with open arms. Over 20 years later, he’s still with us, working in our bindery, lettershop and print department — and we couldn’t feel luckier to have him.

Today, David has that car he dreamed of. He enjoys his independence, has made lasting friendships, and even finds time to give back by volunteering in his community. He is also a local Chamber of Commerce ambassador and won the Chamber’s Superhero award for his volunteer efforts. His story is a powerful reminder of what someone can achieve when given the tools, the support, and most importantly — the chance.

David is just one example of the lives you impact when you support Mays Mission. Because of you, we’re not only able to provide meaningful job training to individuals with disabilities — we’re also helping students reach for higher education through scholarships, building confidence in children through inclusive summer camps, offering resources to those in need, and educating the public on issues that matter.

From all of us at Mays Mission — and from David — thank you for making stories like his possible. You are a blessing to so many.
